Update on Surf Ski Double Crossing of English Channel

Dear All,

Firstly I would like to thank you all very much for your support of our first ever Double Crossing of the English Channel on Surf Skis. Unfortuately, as you are aware, for the second time the British weather gods have been unkind to us and we were unable to attempt the crossing due to 35mph winds blowing straight down the channel causing up to two metre choppy and messy waves in the channel. We did do some paddling at the time which was a lot of fun and I have attached some photos this.

The plan from here:

Third time lucky! Unfortunately, my brother who has come over twice now from Singapore has lost faith in the British weather (!) and is not able to come over again. Therefore we have adapted the team slightly:

  1. Myself- Andrew Griffin- still to do a Double Crossing
  2. Chris Sears- Previously a member of the GB Kayak Team. Also to do a Double Crossing
  3. Ivan Lawler- Ivan is our major sponsor and head of Ultimate Kayaks and distributor of Epic Surf Skis and Kayaks in the UK. He is a six time Marathon Kayak World Champion and is the current British Surf Ski Champion. Ivan is planning to do a single crossing of the channel.
  4. Boyan Zlatarev- Boyan is the European representative and distributor of Epic Surf Skis and Kayaks. He is an elite level paddler with many years of experience, and is planning to do a single crossing as well.

Timing:

We are hoping to do the paddle sometime in the first two weeks of November this year. Under the supervision of the safety boat, we will be in touch with them at the end of October and November and on a day when the weather allows head straight down to Dover to attempt the Challenge. Just in case the first ever Double Crossing of the Channel wasnt challenge enough, we have now added in some potentially Very cold weather as well!

Fund Raising:

So far we have raised nearly £2000 for the Leaside Educational Trust. This is primarily through www.justgiving.com/leasidechannelpaddle with a further £150 donated directly from a Marlow based company.

We are still hoping to have film and footage of the event thanks to Casual Films who have come on board to sponsor us as well as some BBC film producers and will be liasing further closer to the time as weather forecasts are known.

Thank you all once again for your support, it is greatly appreciated. I am away for a short period on a family catch up, but please feel free to contact me if you have any further queries, but I may take a day or two to respond.

Yours sincerely,

Andrew Griffin.
